Mission Statement

The mission of the North Baldwin Literacy Council is to provide instruction by trained volunteer tutors in a one-on-one or small group setting to adult residents of North Baldwin county, 18 years and older, centered around learners' individual goals and capabilities in order to improve their basic reading, writing, and/or life skills. Instruction is designed to build self-esteem, to meet learners' goals and to raise basic literacy skills.

Located in the Bay Minette Public Library, in Bay Minette, AL, the North Baldwin Literacy Council (NBLC)  is a local volunteer-based literacy provider and a United Way agency, established in July of 1995 as a non-profit organization. We serve the area of Baldwin County north of Interstate 10 in the lower part of the state of Alabama.

The primary function of our organization is to provide literacy services to adults for:

  • Zero to eighth grade level reading skills
  • Tailored daily living skills
  • Job and social skills
  • English as a second language course
  • Pre-GED studies
  • Other literacy needs of individual students

The North Baldwin Literacy Council is committed to improving literacy and the lives of our neighbors. We provide FREE and CONFIDENTIAL instruction with flexible times and locations. Classes are held in the morning, afternoons, and at night so that all wanting to learn can find a convenient time to meet with their tutor. One-on-one or small group sessions are available from basic reading skills up to Pre-GED studies.
